Architectural forms can be found in both natural and man made structures. We will use these as a starting point to make a small clay sculpture that will explore creating space and form from simple shapes and decoration. Beginning with paper and card, we will look at creating component parts and use slotting, joining, stamping and balance to make pieces that are lively and dramatic. The clay pieces will be fired for participants to collect from Display Centre at a later date. Sketches and drawings from Chris’ sketchbook will be used as inspiration.
Chris says of his work “I use my work to explore an interest in Modernist architecture and organic forms. I explore balance, shape and space often creating sculptures that are reminiscent of childhood building toys, Brutalist buildings and 1970’s sci-fi. I make a selection of component parts that are assembled, joined and slotted together, using repetition and chance to make pieces that are lively, fluid and structural. I use a limited colour palette of different stoneware clays and use a combination of mono printed underglaze and oxide based colours on the surfaces. The pieces are hand-built with a combination of slab building and extruding. The coloured layers are then revealed through the firing process which gives a rich, energetic surface to the work.”
Ceramics by Chris are featured in our Ceramics Now exhibition which runs from 8 July to 10 September 2022.
