Cristina Zani
Material: Jewellery | Location: Scotland
Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, my work is a reflection on the urban environment, its
geometries and unique stories. Using a combination of different shapes and colours, I craft
wearable art that tells its own story. Central to my creative process is the use of wood, which I
combine with metals.
My pieces are sculptural, bold and tactile; they are usually large in scale, but light to wear.
Although they are based on preparatory sketches, my way of working with materials is largely
intuitive and instinctive. I do not constrain myself to the initial drawings, but I allow incidents to
be part of my creative process.
Following a career in marketing and communications, Italian born artist Cristina Zani completed
an MFA in Jewellery at Edinburgh College of Art in June 2012.
After living and working in several countries, Cristina established her workshop in the Lake
District in 2012. In 2016 she moved to Edinburgh where she is currently based.
In 2011 she was awarded a bursary that enabled her to study jewellery in Seoul for four months.
Her present work is influenced by the Korean urban landscape and explores the contrast between
modern buildings and ancient temples and palaces of South Korea. She combines natural and
painted wood with precious and non-precious metals.
In June 2022 she was invited to teach at TUMO Studios in Armenia. From September 2022 to April
2023 she was in Valencia, Spain as part of a business mobility pilot programme sponsored by the
European Union.
