Gerald Mak

Material: Ceramics | Location: London
Gerald Mak is a Hong Kong born artist based in London, having completed his Masters in Ceramics and Glass at the Royal College of Art in 2020. While studying at RCA, he was selected to participate in the pilot programme RCA China Project cultural experience, a five month residency in China’s city of porcelain, Jingdezhen.

Working with clay has provided Gerald a tangible way to reflect on his evolving experiences and relationships. His body of works often take the form of vessels, sculptures and wall panels. As a recurring motif, his carvings of hands and gestures began with a fascination of what the hand represents in its manifold, signifier of labour or gestures of communication. It becomes potent for Gerald as an artist having a hands-on relationship with clay. He often sees these hand motifs as self portraits to a degree, expressions of his very own.
