The Life Rooms 2019/20: Karen Edwards

Karen Edwards’ printmaking workshops provided participants with an introduction to basic printing techniques, including relief printing, monoprinting and block printing. Participants were able to experiment with leaves, found objects and mark making to create their prints, and created collages and tote bags from their designs. Each participant was also given a sketchbook which they were able to use to practice new techniques before embarking on a final piece, take notes and build up a useful resource they could use again at home.

“I find anything creative helps immensely with my mental health issues. Karen has been amazing and has made me want to carry on printing and build up my self-esteem.”

– LRRC Walton participant

Karen also ran two workshops with clients and their family members at the inpatient unit at Clock View Hospital. Participants used printing blocks and ink pads to print designs onto paper, tote bags and Christmas wrapping paper. Finished pieces were placed on display in clients’ rooms and cabinets.

“I’m made up with that.”

– Clock View Hospital participant

“A thoroughly rewarding experience, with some challenges… I prepared myself by having a flexible approach and the belief that the process is far more important than product. For the Life Rooms participants and myself it was a two-hour window of opportunity for learning new transferable skills, thoughtful conversation and laughter.

The Clock View participants experienced something new (scary for some) but in that small moment of time they embraced it with joy and expressed happiness in their personal achievements.”
