2023 Projects

Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

During 2023/24, we have been pleased to be commissioned for another series of long-term artist residencies by The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust.

Residencies organised by the Bdc for the ‘Arts in Health Programme’ at Clatterbridge Cencer Centre include: printmaking with Karen Edwards; textiles with Tabitha Moses; and 2D techniques with paper and glass by Verity Pulford. Each residency has taken place across approximately six months, with the professional makers delivering 4 x hours of activity on alternate weeks, teaching art and craft techniques to patients, relatives, clinicians, volunteers and staff.

“Our collaboration with The Bluecoat Display Centre is a key part of our patient experience work. It’s been successful in helping our patients feel more relaxed, reduce their anxiety and have a positive impact on their health and wellbeing. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with patients commenting on how much they’ve enjoyed taking part in the arts activity delivered by the makers from The Bluecoat Display Centre. Patients tell us it relaxes them, takes their mind off their treatment and is generally something different and unexpected during a hospital stay.”

– Sam Wade, Arts Coordinator, The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust

The Life Rooms Workshops: ‘Craft for Good’

Continuing our 2022/23 programme with The Life Rooms across all four dedicated sites in Merseyside – Walton, Southport, Bootle and Lee Valley – during 2023 four makers led a further five workshops: textiles with Sally-Anne Thompson at Southport; ceramics with Kirsti Hannah Brown at Lee Valley; ceramics with Chris Turrell at Walton and Southport; and mono-printing with Christine Toh at Bootle.

Additionally, ceramicist Jo Williams led twelve sessions with in-patients at Clockview Hospital in Walton.

This project was funded by the Cadent Foundation, with support from Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. With additional funding from the PH Holt Foundation. Our continuing aim has been to broaden our engagement with diverse members of the local community, including the elderly, who may feel excluded or alienated, and those who would benefit from the therapeutic qualities that art and craft sessions can give.
