In the Window – Jacob Chan

January 2025

We are delighted to announce that local ceramicist Jacob Chan will be ‘In the Window’ from 14 January- 10 February, to celebrate Lunar New Year.

Jacob has developed a new body of work specially for this window installation entitled ‘Zodiac’

‘The 12 Chinese zodiac animals hold deep symbolic significance, representing various aspects of personality, life, and the natural world. Each animal embodies unique traits and energies, reflecting cycles of transformation, growth, and wisdom. For me, these animals are not only a part of cultural heritage but also powerful symbols that resonate with my own journey and experiences.

Through the creation of this body of artwork, which includes ceramics, paintings, and jewellery, I aim to explore and express the profound meanings behind each zodiac animal. The ceramic pieces capture the tactile essence and durability of the animals’ characteristics, while the paintings bring to life their energy and symbolism in vivid, visual form. The jewellery pieces serve as intimate, wearable representations, allowing these symbols to connect on a personal level with those who interact with them.

This collection is an exploration of balance, strength, vulnerability, and the unique qualities that each zodiac animal represents. It reflects my desire to share these timeless symbols with others and to celebrate the rich cultural significance they hold, while also infusing my own interpretation and connection to them through the medium of art’.- Jacob Chan

Bluecoat Display Centre has been awarded funding by the Ulrike Michal Foundation for the Arts to enable this window installation.
