Jacob Chan – In the Window, January 2022

3 – 31 January 2022

Part of Celebrating Craft

To start 2022, we are delighted to show a new group of work by local ceramicist Jacob Chan ‘In the Window’.

“My work is a combination of wheel thrown and figurative vessels that are heavily based around my cultural background and heritage. My ceramics are soda fired in a gas kiln which reaches a top temperature of 1300c this process allows me to achieve a range of deep colours and surface textures unachievable in an electric kiln.

Being half Chinese and half English, my ceramics take inspiration from traditional oriental shapes and forms whilst focusing on mythical figures as surface decoration.

Within the figurative parts of my work, I include pieces of natural slate and broken pottery that have been collected from around the coastlines and mountain ranges of Britain. I use these materials to represent my Western culture and my cultural journey through my creativity.

This new collection of work displays a range of ceremonial teapots and a group of smaller vessels referred to as miniatures, all of the pieces are gilded with 24k gold leaf and inlayed with a blue sapphire which is colour specific to the Bluecoat Display Centre.” – Jacob Chan

We are delighted that Jacob Chan’s – In the Window is part of the Crafts Council’s Make! Craft! Live! – a year-long programme of nationwide exhibitions, learning events, fairs, and digital activities that celebrates the value of craft to empower, enrich and connect our society, and which marks the Crafts Council’s 50th Anniversary.

Bluecoat Display Centre is partnering with the Walker Art Gallery on ‘Past Present Future: Celebrating Craft’ – a series of curated, selling displays highlighting the diverse, emerging and established makers working in studios across the North West. From January – May 2022, we will present displays across our venues featuring work by makers including Jacob Chan, Halima Cassell, Stephen Dixon, David & Margaret Frith, Hugh Miller, Francisca Onumah, Attila Olah, Verity Pulford, Emma Rodgers, and Paul Scott.
