In partnership with Greater Manchester University we have selected three 2025 Textiles and Surface Design graduates for our September In the Window.
My work focuses on the tactile and sensory dimensions of textile art, inspired by the intricate beauty and textures of nature, through hand and free-motion embroidery, fabric manipulation, and hot textiles. Capturing the beauty of the natural world encourages others to appreciate and connect with it on a deeper level.
Throughout my childhood, I often collected shards of pottery and stones, drawn to their abstract beauty of unusual shapes, patterns, and textures. The recent rediscovery of my childhood collection has revived this passion, has naturally become the source of inspiration within my craft practice, embracing foraged materials and applied processes. Working primarily with hand techniques such as fabric dyeing, layering, and hand stitch, I allow meditative processes to shape the composition and outcome of each piece.
My collection ‘Reflections and Refractions’ is inspired by the ocean, and the interaction of light and water. The project responded to a series of underwater photographs showing the patterns of water surfaces and the play of light on the sea floor. The delicate look of the light brought to mind lace and sheer fabrics and led me to this final collection of pieces evoking the movement of water through manipulated fabric, digital embroidery and hand embellishment. Each of the four pieces explores a different aspect of the ocean, from the rocky sea floor to the reflection of the sky on the surface.
