Learn how to design and make a hand-pleated scarf and a smaller neckpiece with a three-dimensional textured surface. You will start by selecting a coloured fabric, and will make your scarf using hand-folding and hand-stitching techniques. Your design will be steam-set to create a surface similar to the Japanese “Shibori” technique. Nawal will show you how she creates an invisible hem, on her silk scarves making them both modern and appealing.
Scarves made by Nawal are also for sale here in the gallery. Nawal makes a series of opulent origami shapes, sultry swirls, metamorphosed silks and pleats in abundance. Elaborate scarves dominate her collection and range from day to evening. Nawal’s work is heavily influenced by tactile textures, rhythms of nature, Japanese paper-folding and “Shibori” techniques; whilst also drawing from her worldwide expeditions through Europe, Russia, China, Japan and the Americas. Using a rich colour palette, each item is handmade, stitched and fused with a variety of fabrics to retain each pleat even after wear or wash. The abundance of technique is extraordinary as is the depth of craftsmanship. Nawal’s ability to work fabrics into art into fashion makes each item personal and unique.

We are hosting a meet the makers event with both Jessica and Nawal here on Saturday 2nd December from 2pm – 4pm. This is an opportunity to meet and chat to Jessica & Nawal about their works and inspiration. You can also try on both Jessica’s jewellery and Nawal’s scarves to see how they might be worn. These versatile pieces are ideal gifts for Christmas or to treat yourself. Entry is free.
