We are delighted to announce that acclaimed glass artist Peter Layton will be giving our annual lecture in memory of founder of Bluecoat Display Centre, Robert Gardner-Medwin.
Peter’s illustrated talk will coincide with his solo exhibition at Bluecoat Display Centre, celebrating 35 years of the London Glassblowing Studio which he founded.
Peter Layton is one of the world’s most widely respected glass artists and he has done more to promote glassmaking as an art form than anyone else in Europe. He has influenced, encouraged and nurtured several of the UK’s leading glassmakers and has inspired many more internationally. At the age of 75, Peter remains extremely active in his field and is regarded as the ‘grand old man of glass’.
‘Perfection of Production’
As part of Bluecoat Display Centre’s ongoing programme of exciting artist’s talks, the next event will feature local textile artist Helen Chatterton. Helen will speak about her artistic career in creating fine textiles.
Helen will be exclusively speaking about her use of textiles including Harris Tweed and other wool sourced from the Scottish Highlands for this showcase. She combines these with different fabrics including a specially printed linen depicting a 19th Century map of Liverpool. Her favourite periods in history are the 1920s 1930s. Many of her colour-ways reflect these period themes.
In addition to her work as a designer, she also teaches a range of classes and techniques such as lace-making and Fair Isle knitting. Helen has also recently taken part in an artist residency at Holly Lodge Girls College, as part of our ‘Making an Impact’ project.
A traditional afternoon tea in the grand setting of The Athenaeum will follow the talk.
This event is open to current and new subscribing Friends of Bluecoat Display Centre and Members of The Athenaeum. Attendees must be over the age of 14.
Meet outside the Bluecoat Display Centre on College Lane at 8.45am.

Mixed media artist Elizabeth Willow‘s theatrical style of presentation is sure to make this a memorable afternoon at The Athenaeum Club. Elizabeth is a fine and applied local artist, who makes sculptures, installations, interventions and artist books.
Elizabeth says of her work “I have used old paper and rusted wire, words and gestures, flowers, feathers, ink, dreams and thread to create my works of art. Often I use found objects and materials, things which have been abandoned, discarded, or things which are broken and, freed from their original function, can become something else. The act of finding is important, as much a part of what I make as the material itself. I am inspired by stories, by fairytales and myths and dreams, by what we remember and what is forgotten.”
Elizabeth’s work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally; and shown in galleries, museums and theatres, as well as on beaches and in libraries, gardens, dilapidated houses and a railway station.
