Kim Sutherland is an award winning, London-based maker who creates resonant sculptural works and intricate etchings
that are imbued with soul. Her singular work exists at the meeting point of memory, material and personal narrative, often incorporating antique objects to infuse each piece with a rich patina of time. Kim’s practice spans the disciplines of metalsmithing, drawing and printmaking through an ongoing exploration of the ancient technique of intaglio etching - the ‘bite’ of line into metal – which allows her to create the symbolically ‘charged’ surfaces that sit at the heart of her work. Ancient wisdom, sacred sites, folklore , goddess traditions, meditative motifs, and contemporary vision converge into a unique language with which she tells stories that nourish the mind and elevate the spirit.

‘My process begins with extensive drawing, historical and visual research and is then developed through a combination of making, assemblage, carving and fabrication, working and reworking. Intricate drawings are etched into metal which is then formed and fabricated into finished pieces quite intuitively using traditional metalsmithing techniques such as electroforming, lost wax casting, piercing, soldering and patination.
It’s a meticulous and precise way of making, full of intent, and it takes time. The time invested in the making is embodied in the contemplative nature of the final pieces - encouraging a deep, unfolding engagement within the viewer'
