Lydia Latham

Material: Mixed Media | Location: North Wales
Lydia Latham is an illustrator, award-winning spoon carver and renowned kolrosing artist. She lives and works in North Eryri, and draws inspiration from the surrounding landscapes. This includes the abundant plants and shrubs that thrive in scrublands, by roadsides and along footpaths. Lydia sheds light on the overlooked beauty of these common and unassuming so-called weeds. Her 2D work combines intricate fine line drawing with negative space watercolour to create sensitive and thoughtful botanical illustrations. Her 3D work uses kolrosing to adorn her hand carved spoons with similar, striking designs.

Kolrosing is a traditional method of embellishing wooden items with detailed line art. This technique involves using a blade tip to perform precise singular cuts, which part the grain, and allow a staining pigment to be applied. Lydia applies this niche technique to her beautiful spoons, which are carved using only an axe, hook knife and straight knife. All wood is ethically sourced from local tree surgeons.
