Sue Mundy trained at North Staffordshire Polytechnic from 1983 to 1986 and has been creating in clay ever since. The natural world has remained a constant source of inspiration throughout her practice.
Her current body of work explores the forms and surface textures discovered through close observation of trees and bones. During her daily walks in local woodlands, Sue continues to find inspiration in the
unexpected shapes of felled trees and the intricate nodules that grow from them. Working primarily with slow, repetitive hand-building techniques, she allows each piece to develop gradually and thoughtfully. This
deliberate process gives the work a quiet, contemplative quality as each form slowly emerges. Before firing, Sue colours and marks the clay using slips and sgraffito, enhancing the surface and emphasising
the natural forms that inspire her. The finished pieces are glazed with a soft matt glaze and fired in an electric kiln, resulting in tactile ceramic works that celebrate the beauty and subtle complexity of the natural world.
